We can only offer VAT exemption on certain eligible products when being purchased solely for an individual user. All items that are eligible for vat relief are clearly given a vat exempt purchase option on our website.
A UK charity can buy sensory equipment without paying VAT, but only if the equipment is specifically designed for disabled people and is for their personal or domestic use. The item has to be purchased for a named individual, not multiple users and a Vat exemption form must be completed with the intended users personal details for the HMRC. (our site takes you to the form upon purchase)
A charity cannot claim VAT exemption if: The sensory equipment is not specifically designed for disabled people (e.g., generic lights, beanbags, toys). The equipment is for general use, education, or therapy rooms rather than for a named disabled person’s personal/domestic use. The charity cannot provide the required declaration.
Charities may be able to claim VAT back by other means such as through their accounts, however we cannot do this at source or provide guidance. Our process is in line with Section 3.3 of HMRC VAT Notice 701/7 – Reliefs from VAT for disabled and older people.

Some items qualify to be VAT free (zero rated) provided they are being purchased by, or on behalf of someone who is “chronically sick or disabled” and the goods purchased are for “personal or domestic use. Eligible items are marked (not all items are eligible as they are not specifically designed and made for those with a disability - for example games and balls)
Therefore if you are a parent or carer purchasing one of our products for your child you may not need to pay VAT & should ensure that the VAT exemption box is selected. Please note that as VAT must be charged on delivery a VAT value will still be displayed
Chronically sick or disabled is defined as a person with a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon his/her ability to carry out everyday activities; OR a person with a condition which the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as autism. A statement of special educational needs or a diagnosis of a condition is not necessary.
Charities qualify for VAT exemption where these conditions are met, however schools and homes may not qualify as the goods are not for domestic use, however they may be able to reclaim the VAT from Customs & Excise. If your organisation qualifies please download and complete the VAT exemption declaration form here and send this with your order.
If you are in any doubt as to whether you are eligible to receive zero rated goods you should contact the HM Revenue & Customs National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000 or call our Helpline on 02890 319360 before signing a declaration.
