Planning A Day Out: How To Build A Sensory Toolkit

Fidget toys are a great starting point for most kids - and we have a fantastic range to provide a range of tactile support.

The sun has been spotted in the UK, and indeed here in Northern Ireland too! And with the summer holidays fast approaching, it's very well worth planning ahead and stocking up on the sensory goodies that will help keep your child regulated and happy over the break.

I've always found myself a little pulled in two directions with my children over the holidays - invariably, there will be complaints of "I'm bored", and yet getting out comes with its own set of challenges. I'm always really mindful to ensure that they feel safe and supported as we make precious memories together as a family.

Every child and family is different, so please do feel free to tailor these suggestions to your own child-but below I will share the must haves that I pack in to our Learning SPACE drawstring bag on every outing.

Ear defenders and/or Sunglasses

For children who find noisy environments overstimulating, ear defenders can really help to take the edge off while still allowing them to engage. My son tends to find the busyness or size of a space more overwhelming than volume, so he benefits from sunglasses to cut out some of the visual noise.

The Amazing Jellyball

Soft, squishy, and captures the light beautifully when you bring it out on a bright day! I think I love this one as much as the children do.
Children enjoy squishing and stretching the Amazing Jellyball, and the squelchy noises are so satisfying.

Scrunchems Light Up Galaxy Squish Ball

We love Scrunchems just as much as we love NeeDoh! The Galaxy Light Up Ball features the light for extra aesthetic appeal, but there is just something so satisfying about squishing these. Little hands can burn off some restless energy with this fantastic range of fidget toys

Bubbles

Bubbles are a really great way to encourage movement , distraction and energy burning while you are outdoors, no matter what age. My older children love blowing bubbles for their little brother- and of course there is nothing more satisfying than chasing and popping them!

Visual Toys

Light Up Mini Fish Aquarium

A visual aid, like the Light Up Mini Fish Aquarium or an Ooze Tube, can provide help with emotional regulation. I find a toy like this to be especially beneficial during bus journeys or waiting around- a quiet, calming distraction.

Fidget Blox Sound Sensory Toy

For a little bit of sound sensory stimulation, this little toy does the job. Kids can busy themselves from squeezing this toy, causing the little balls to make a satisfying "pop" as they are pushed from one side of the Fidget Blox to the other.

Aroma Dough

With Aroma Dough, you can add scent to your sensory diet!
If your child finds smells overwhelming, they are not alone. For our family, using public transport is a particular challenge- it's easy to step on board and find yourself overwhelmed with scents like cigarette smoke, perfume and more. We find that a pinch of aromadough(you pick the scent!) kneaded between the fingers not only provides tactile support, but leaves a pleasant, familiar scent on the fingers. It's quite easy to discreetly play with the dough near to the face, which can feel quite grounding.

Chewbuddy Stickman

Stickman comes with us on most outings, worn proudly on his lanyard by my youngest son - he would otherwise be quite prone to licking and chewing his hands or sucking his hair when he is feeling overwhelmed. Stickman makes a safe and familiar companion too, but can be tucked under a jumper or hoodie when not needed.

Fidget toys are a great starting point for most kids - and we have a fantastic range to provide a range of tactile support. I would strongly encourage you to think about the sensations that your child seeks out and start from there - for example, if they seek sound stimulation, then some Fidget Pop Tubes, a Groan Tube or the Fidget Blox Sound Sensory Toy would be a good start. We have a range of Glow In The Dark Toys, Light Up Toys and Visual Timers for those who enjoy Visual Sensory Toys.

Still not sure? Why not order a Sensory Surprise Bundle? We will even send it in one of our handy drawstring bags. Perfect for on the go fun!

Frequently asked questions

What sensory toys are best for travelling with children?

The best sensory toys for travel are compact, portable and easy to use on the go. Fidget toys, sensory balls, chewies, aroma dough, visual aids, bubbles and ear defenders can all help children stay calm, regulated and engaged during journeys and family outings.

How can I help my child stay calm during summer outings?

Planning ahead is key. Pack familiar sensory items that your child enjoys, such as fidget toys, sunglasses, ear defenders or a favourite chewy. Regular movement breaks, quiet spaces and sensory supports can help prevent overwhelm and make outings more enjoyable.

Why are sensory toys helpful when travelling?

Sensory toys provide calming, tactile, visual or auditory input that can help children regulate their emotions in busy or unfamiliar environments. They can also reduce anxiety, encourage focus and provide a comforting distraction while travelling or waiting.

What should I pack in a sensory travel kit?

A sensory travel kit might include ear defenders, sunglasses, fidget toys, sensory balls, bubbles, aroma dough, a visual sensory toy, a chewy necklace and a drawstring bag to keep everything organised. Choose items based on your child's individual sensory preferences and needs.

Are sensory travel essentials suitable for autistic children?

Yes. Many sensory travel essentials are popular with autistic children and those with sensory processing differences because they provide familiar sensory input and support emotional regulation. However, every child is unique, so it's important to choose products that match their individual sensory profile and preferences.
